The beautiful, Romanesque Abbazia di Sant’Antimo lies in an isolated valley just below the village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, 11km from Montalcino. It’s Romanesque exterior features stone carvings set in the bell tower and apsidal chapels. Visit in the morning when the sun – streaming through the windows – creates a surreal atmosphere, or at night when it’s lit up. The real highlight though is when the monks perform Gregorian chants during daily services; check its website for times.
