It's official: the Dolomite mountains in northeastern Italy are one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world: in 2009 UNESCO added them to the list of Natural World Heritage Sites. 200 million years old, these craggy, colorful, majestic peaks rise to 10,000 ft (3,000 metres) in height.
People go to the Dolomites to ski, to climb, to trek, to mountain bike, ride chairlifts and cable cars, explore villages and sit by lakes, and just to look in awe at their sheer beauty. Summer or winter, the Dolomites are a popular destination.
