Sperlonga

The coastal Italian town of Sperlonga was a seaside retreat during the ancient Roman era, and with good reason – it's home to a spectacular beach, and it's not far from Rome.
Located roughly halfway between Rome and Naples, Sperlonga was the site of a villa built by Emperor Tiberius in the 1st century C.E. Today, there is a museum on the site of the former villa, and you can visit the grotto that was once filled with statues. Those statues, only discovered in the 1950s, are now on display in the museum.
During that same time, a new road was built that allowed for greater access to Sperlonga, which led to its rise once again as a seaside retreat. It was the construction of this road that led to the discovery of many of the Roman artifacts that are the town's main attractions today. The beach at Sperlonga is wide and sandy, and one of the most popular in the area.

Practical Info

Sperlonga is roughly 74 miles from both Rome and Naples, and the train that connects those two cities stops in Fondi, which is not far from Sperlonga. From the train station at Fondi, you can take a local bus or hire a taxi to reach Sperlonga.
