Neapolis Archaeological Park

Just outside Syracuse's city center lies the Neapolis Archaeological Park, where the bulk of the city's ancient Greek and Roman structures can be seen.
The buildings inside the archaeological park date from the 5th century B.C.E., and include a stunning amphitheater called the Teatro Greco. There is also a third century B.C.E. stone altar once used for sacrifices, a second century Roman theater, and a limestone quarry site from which stone was removed to build the ancient city. One unusual sight is a tall cave known as the “Ear of Dionysus,” in which the smallest sound is magnified exponentially.

Practical Info

The archaeological park is open Monday-Saturday starting at 9am and closing one hour before sunset, and on Sundays the park closes at 1:45pm. The Teatro Greco is often used during the summer months for classical plays, which means the park closes earlier than usual. Tickets cost €10 for adults and €5 for students ages 18-25.
