Royal Palace Museum (Museo di Palazzo Reale)

Genoa's Palazzo Reale, or Royal Palace, didn't actually start out with that moniker. Looking at the palace now, however, it's hard to imagine it being anything but a royal home.
Built in the early 17th century for the Balbi family, the Royal Palace was one of Genoa's famous “Palazzi dei Rolli.” It wasn't until the 19th century when the Royal House of Savoy moved in that the palace got its royal name. The Savoys made lots of changes to the original structure, including plenty of exterior decoration. Now the only nod to its original occupants is the name of the street – Via Balbi.
The Palazzo Reale is now a museum, the rooms full of things the Savoy family once owned. There's lots of historic furniture and art, including some noteworthy artists. You'll find paintings by Tintoretto and Van Dyck, among others.

Practical Info

Admission to the Royal Palace Museum is €4 for adults, €2 for students ages 18-25, and free for children and seniors. The museum is open Tuesday-Wednesday 9am-1:30pm, Thursday-Sunday 9am-7pm, and closed on Mondays.
