Scaliger Tombs (Arche Scaligere)

With their looming gothic spires and elaborate sarcophagi standing proud in the courtyard of the Santa Maria Antica church, the much-photographed Scaliger Tombs stand out among Verona’s wealth of architectural highlights. Dating from the 14th-century, the ornate mausoleums have long been acclaimed as a masterpiece of Gothic art, although the architect remains unknown. 
A series of five tombs are viewable by the public, commemorating the Scaliger (or Della Scala) family, who ruled Verona during the 13th and 14th centuries. Most impressive is the grand Cangrande I tomb, fronted by an equestrian statue of Cangrande. There’s also the tomb of Mastino II, watched over by a pair of angels; the richly decorated tombs of Cansignorio and Alberto II; and the Giovanni tomb, now built into the wall of the church.

Practical Info

The Scaliger Tombs are located in the courtyard of the Santa Maria Antica church, which is open daily from 7.30am to 12.30pm and 3.30pm to 7pm. Admission to the church and tombs is €4.50.
