For centuries, life in Kurzeme revolved around seafaring and fishing. Occupying vast parkland territory, the museum features a collection of fishing crafts, anchors and traditional log houses, brought from coastal villages north and south of Ventspils. A bonus attraction is a narrow-gauge railway, built by the occupying Germans in 1916. The current circuit route that runs through the city's maritime park is just a tiny part of the now-defunct network that connected villages along the coast.
But two original German locomotives are still in operation. The station, adjacent to the museum's cash office, is a copy of the one from the village of Mazirbe, north of Ventspils.
