Latvian Riflemen Sq, on the other side of the Occupation Museum, was once home to Rīga’s central market. Today the square is dominated by the imposing and controversial statue honouring Latvia’s Riflemen, who formed the core of Russia's Red Army in 1918. Some of them served as Lenin’s personal bodyguards. Yet, most returned to the newly independent Latvia.
