Originally built by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century, and nearly completely razed in the late 19th (after centuries of neglect), Klaipėda Castle is rising again. Above the surviving moat and earth ramparts a huge reconstruction project is underway, promising to restore the seaward focal point to the city. While it remains to be seen how convincing the reconstruction is, the first phase was expected to be complete by 2016.
