Gozo

Tiny Gozo is 9.25 miles by 4.25 miles (15 km by 7 km) at its widest point and lies north of Malta. Unlike its big sister Malta, Gozo has opted for the quiet life. The island's capital, Victoria (or Rabat) is the epicenter of the island, with all roads leading from there. It-Tokk, the town’s charming central square, is where locals and visitors alike meet up in pretty cafés and shop for local lace and knitwear at the daily morning market. Around the corner is the Citadel, a miniature walled fortress town with impregnable walls and bastions, built in the 17th century to protect Gozo’s citizens from piracy.
On Gozo's west coast at Dwejra Point lies the spectacular rock arch known as the Azure Window. It is one of Malta's most photographed sights and attracts hordes of day-trippers. The island's best beaches include Ramla Bay and San Blas, and there is swimming at the cove of Mġarr ix-xini. 
At Ġgantija is one of the largest and oldest of Malta's temples, built around 3,600 BC, with massive stone walls, passageways and altars. The photogenic village of Xagħra is close by, with a pretty square and the cute little Pomskizillious Museum of Toys, showcasing the works of Edward Lear and a collection of presepio crib figures. The classically Maltese village of Għarb features handsome golden-stoned 18th-century houses as well as the Folklore Museum -- tracing island life across the ages. 
Nearby Ta' Pinu is Gozo's most impressive church and the holiest site on the island. It came to prominence in 1883, when a local woman claimed she heard the voice of Jesus nearby. Many miracles were proclaimed and the church became a pilgrimage stop-off; the present basilica was constructed in 1932 to accommodate all the faithful. Peer inside the side chapel, where crutches and crash helmets have been offered up for thanksgiving.

Practical Info

The ferry leaves from Ċirkewwa at the northern tip of Malta to Mġarr on Gozo every 30 minutes. Between July and September the service runs 24 hours a day, and from October to June between 5am and 11pm. Trips take 25 minutes and all the ferries take vehicles.
Public buses from Victoria (Rabat) pass all the sights mentioned above; route 307 is useful for Ġgantija, Xagħra and Ta' Pinu. The temple at Ġgantija is open daily, as is Ta’ Pinu -- which closes at lunchtime; the MaltaPass can be used here for discounted entry.
