House of Soviets
The House of Soviets, towering over the eastern end of ul 25 Oktober, has Lenins angry-looking bust peering out from its prime location.
Government House
Government House, where cabinet meets, is the gargantuan building opposite the Arc de Triomphe. Its notable mainly for its heft and Soviet-style architecture.
National Army Museum
This small open-air military exhibition displays a distinctly sorry-looking collection of Soviet-made tanks, fighter planes and other military toys inherited by Moldovas armed forces.
Kirov Park
North along ul Lenina, towards the bus and train stations, is Kirov Park, with a statue of the Leningrad boss who was assassinated in 1934, conveniently sparking mass repressions throughout the USSR.
Orthodox Cathedral
The main highlight of the Parcul Catedralei is the citys main Orthodox Cathedral, dating from the 1830s. The bell tower was originally built in 1836, but was destroyed after WWII and rebuilt in 1997.
National Art Museum
Interesting collection of contemporary European (mostly Romanian and Moldovan) art, folk art, icons and medieval knick-knacks. Check in for interesting temporary exhibitions, such as the display of Otto Dix graphic art that was on during our visit.
Arc de Triomphe
Chişinăus own Arc de Triomphe dates from the 1840s and marks the centre of the city. It was built to commemorate the victory of the Russian army over the Ottoman Empire. Its often draped with a Moldovan flag in the middle and makes for a stirring photo op.
Soroca Fortress
This commanding structure dates from 1499 when Moldavian Prince Ştefan cel Mare built a wooden fortress here. It was given its circular shape, with five stone bastions, in the middle of the 16th century by Petru Rareş. The fortress was closed for reconstruction at the time of resea
