Monaco Formula One Grand Prix
The Grand Prix of Monaco is a mythic Formula One race held each year with the narrow course laid out on the winding streets of Monaco. The course around the principality incorporates hills, tight corners and a tunnel, making it a challenging and demanding race track, even at the slower speeds than the general Formula One.
The first race was run in 1929 and won by William Grover-Williams, driving a Bugatti 35 B car in 3h56’11’ with an average speed of 80.194 km/h. The glamorous and prestigious Grand Prix of Monaco was won in following years by greats like Schumacher, Prost, Fangio and Graham Hill, who won five times in the 60's and is hence known as "Mr Monaco". Brazil's Ayrton Senna won five races consecutively (1989 and 1993) and has the most wins of any driver (six in total).
Created in 1997, the Historical Grand Prix of Monaco takes place every two years on the same circuit as the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the preceding weekend. The nostalgic charm of the vintage cars adds even more glamour to the stunning location and vistas of the Monaco circuit. Watch it from one of the many vantage points around the town, including the terrace of the new yacht club designed by Sir Norman Foster. Just be careful to look both ways before crossing the road!
