Kamp Vught National Monument

TIME : 2016/2/19 2:26:00

The only SS-operated concentration camp outside Germany (Westerbork was a 'transit camp') stood outside the suburb of Vught, 6km south of Den Bosch. The site has been preserved as a monument to those who suffered and died here, with a reconstructed version of one of the barracks. A museum documents the personal experiences of both prisoners and SS commanders.

Kamp Vught served as both a labor and transit camp for 31,000 captives, including 12,000 Jews, almost all of whom were transported to death camps.

Bus 213 (capacity eight) rides out here from Den Bosch station. Alternatively, a bicycle path skirts the Drongelens Canal, a green corridor for flora and fauna, leading directly to Kamp Vught National Monument via a bridge that spans the canal. It's a serene 5km ride west of town. Heading south along the west bank of the Dommel River, follow knooppunten 54-21-22-24-33.
