Founded in 1990, the Witte de With, Centre for Contemporary Art has its finger on the pulse of breaking developments in contemporary art worldwide. Its experimental exhibitions, installations and events have a laser-sharp social and political focus, and it has a reputation as a launch pad for up-and-coming talent. It closes between exhibitions while new works are being set up, so check ahead to be sure it's open.
The centre is a linchpin of several contemporary culture institutions on and around Witte de Withstraat that are collectively known as the Kunstblock Rotterdam (Arts Block Rotterdam; http://kunstblock.nl). Try to catch Art Evening , held on the first Friday of each month, when the venues are free to visit from 6pm to 9pm, and free one-hour introductory tours kick off from 7pm.
