Overloon, a tiny town on the border with Noord Brabant, was the scene of fierce battles between the Americans, British and the Germans as part of Operation Market Garden in 1944. The heart of the battlefield is now the site of the sober Nationaal Oorlogs- en Verzetsmuseum , a thoughtful place that examines the role of the Netherlands in WWII and the fate of Dutch resistance fighters.
To reach the museum take the half-hourly train to Venray from either Roermond (€7.70, 40 minutes) or Nijmegen (€6.60, 35 minutes). Then take a taxi to the museum, 7km from the station (about €10). Make arrangements with the driver for your return. National bike route LF3 passes by 6km to the east.
