Beginning in 1942 Kamp Westerbork became a transit point for Dutch Jews being sent to the Nazi death camps of Central and Eastern Europe. Though little remains of the original installations, photo blow-ups mark the locations of features such as the punishment building and the workshops where internees worked as virtual slaves. A visit to the camp starts with the excellent museum at the car park, with displays tracing the holocaust in the Netherlands.
The camp itself is a 2km walk through a forest from the museum (or a €2 bus ride).
