The 15th-century Gothic tower is the only surviving component of a church that used to stand on this spot until an unfortunate gunpowder blast in 1787. F The square in front, Lieve Vrouwekerkhof, is Amersfoort's most charming spot. Tickets to ascend the tower (346 steps, fine views) are sold at the nearby VVV.
The tower previously marked the exact centre of the Netherlands, as indicated by the subterranean laser light within, and is still used as a reference point in the Dutch geographical coordinate system.
