To the immediate southwest of the Sint Janskerk church and near a small canal, the city museum is housed in an old hospital, Catherina Gasthuis. It covers Gouda's history and has a few artworks. In the basement a ghoulish section on local torture in the Middle Ages includes devices for the condemned including an executioner's axe, and a scale model of Gouda as it was in the 1600s. Outside, there's a pretty walled garden.
