Look for the opulent facade of the Gemeenlandshuis van Delfland across the canal from the Oude Kerk. It dates from 1505.

Floras Hof
This petite garden, immediately to the right of the Domtoren entrance, makes a peaceful retreat from which to observe the tower.

It was in this evocative courtyard that the states of Holland and Zeeland met in 1572 to declare independence from Spain.

Near the Vondelparks eastern end, the 19th-century Italian Renaissance-style Vondelparkpaviljoen is now a cafe-bar, Vondelpark3.

The Museum Simon van Gijn depicts the life of an 18th-century patrician, with vintage knick-knacks, furnishings and tapestries.

Sassenpoort
The 15th-century Sassenpoort, situated at the corner of Sassenstraat and Wilhelminasingel, is one of the remaining town gates.

City Gates
Two 15th-century city gates, the Broederpoort and Cellebroederpoort, survive along the bucolic park on Kampens west side.

Gravensteen
The Gravensteen dates to the 13th century and was once a prison. The gallery facing the plaza was where judges watched executions.

The large old Jewish cemetery on the Walensingel has a stark memorial to the many Middelburg Jews taken away to their deaths by the Nazis.

Burgers’ Zoo tries to re-create the natural environments of its many animals. The creatures mostly don’t buy this ruse, given the climate.

Flanked by café (pub-bar) terraces, this tranquil square has twin views of 17th-century canals and cruise ships docking at the Docklands.

Oosterbeek War Cemetery
More than 1700 Allied (mostly British and Free Polish) troops are buried at this site, 500m east of Oosterbeek train station (follow the signs).
