This beautiful estate, on the island of the same name, was built in 1873 as the summer residence of Norway’s ‘first superstar’, violinist Ole Bull. This extravagant, fantastical 'Little Alhambra’, designed by Bull and Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe, took much of its inspiration from the architecture of Moorish Granada and integrated not only intricate frets and trellises, but also onion domes, garden paths, Italian marble columns and a high-ceilinged music hall made of Norwegian pine.
The grounds are criss-crossed with 13km of leisurely walks and there's a small cafe. There's a passenger ferry (adult/child Nkr60/30, eight minutes, hourly 11am to 3pm) from Buena Quay to the island; Skyss buses run an infrequent service to Buena from Bergin bus station.
