Oslo Cruise Port

The capital of Norway, Oslo is the second busiest port in the country, ranking behind only Bergen. It is one of the world’s largest capital cities, but also one of the least densely populated.  Much of the city’s 175 square miles are covered by fields, forests and lakes, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers.

How to get to Oslo

Your cruise ship will dock in Oslo within easy walking distance of many major sights. Trams and water taxis are available to take you to further into the city or to the several museums located across the harbor on Bygdoy Peninsula.

One Day in Oslo

Start your visit with a stop at the must-see Nobel Peace Center on the waterfront and then head over to City Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies take place each year.

If you want to explore Norway’s maritime history, take a water taxi or ferry across the harbor to Bygdoy Peninsula, where you will find the Kon Tiki Museum (displaying the wooden raft that Thor Heyerdahl sailed from Peru to Polynesia), the Viking Ship Museum and the Fram Museum (showcasing the ship used to explore the South Pole and the Arctic in the 19th century). Nearby on the peninsula you can also visit the Norwegian Folk Museum, home to around 150 17th and 18th century buildings from around the country.

Those who instead prefer to explore the center of Oslo can make the short walk from the waterfront to the 13th century Akershus Fortress, sitting on a hilltop overlooking the Oslo Fjord. Spend a couple hours taking in the fortress, castle and the Norwegian Resistance Museum located inside. After a stop at the nearby Oslo Cathedral, head to Karl Johan Gate, the large pedestrian mall that is the heart of the city. A walk along Karl Johan Gate will take you all the way to the Royal Palace, where you may be able to catch the daily changing of the guard.

Finally, get a taste of Norwegian art at the National Gallery, Munch Museum or the Vigeland Sculpture Park, an outdoor sculpture garden on the outskirts of Oslo.

ATMs, currency exchange facilities, internet access and a tourist information desk are all available at the port. The local currency is the krone and credit cards are generally accepted throughout the city. The local language is Norwegian, though most locals also speak English.
