Geiranger

With a dramatic backdrop of gnarly sea cliffs, pine-blanketed pikes and iridescent waters, the coastal village of Geiranger is photogenic from every angle, right down to the pretty multi-colored houses perched along the hillsides and quaint fishing harbor. In fact, the setting is so stunning that it recently served as inspiration for Disney movie Frozen and fans will surely recognize its influence on the icy onscreen landscapes. Tucked in the folds of the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, the small town is the gateway to Norway’s mighty fjords and a popular stop for cruise ships.
While cruising around the fjords is the main reason visitors flock to Geiranger, there’s plenty of interest on dry land too, not least the jaw-dropping views. For the best lookout points, hike to the peak of nearby Mt. Dalsnibba, brave a photo on the famous overhanging cliffs at Flydalsjuvet or drive the equally spectacular and hair-raising Ørnevegen (the Eagle Road) into the mountains. Back in the village, the Geiranger Fjord Centre will fill you in on the region’s history and natural wonders, or you can hike to one of the many nearby waterfalls, and enjoy kayaking or fishing around the fjord.
