Marilyn Monroe Memorial
Bizarrely, Haugesund claims to be the ancestral home of Marilyn Monroe, whose father, a local baker, emigrated to the USA. This monument on the quay, next to the Rica Maritim Hotel, is suitably coquettish, if not a great likeness. It commemorates the 30th anniversary of her death.

Harald Sæverud Museum
Composer Harald Sæverud and his wife Marie lived in this simple timber home, 3km south of Troldhaugen. It was constructed in the 1930s of natural stone and untreated wood aiming to create unity with the environment. To get here, take bus 30 from platform 20 at the bus terminal.

Jernaldergarden
This reconstruction of a 1500-year-old Iron Age farm, 4km south of the centre, features various activities, staff in period dress and food preparation on Sunday. Take bus 5a or 5b towards Sandnes to Ullandhaug (Nkr36, 15 minutes) from next to the Radisson Hotel on Breiavann lake.

Ålesund Church
Built of solid stone in 1909, Ålesunds parish church has a strikingly wide chancel, every square inch covered in frescos over the wide sweep of its tunnel arch. Notable too are the stained glass windows, especially those in the north aisle with their appropriately nautical theme.
