Among the finest old buildings in town, look out for the stone storehouse(1674–91), the oldest building in Gamlebyen and now a ceramics showroom.

Outside the Russian consulate, there are two engaging little sculptures of a bear mounting – in every sense of the word, it would appear – a lamppost.

Alongside the fjord, the Sulitjelma Mining Museum records the areas 100 years of mining history and displays some awesome rusting equipment.

For one of the loveliest turf-roofed homes youll see, head up to the top of Kjerkgata to the house signposted as Harald Sohlsbergs Plass 59.

King Olav Tryggvason Statue
The epicentre of town is Torvet, the central square (also spelt Torget) with its statue of King Olav Tryggvason atop a column that acts as a huge sundial.

Between 1949 and 1981, this historic seal-hunting ship killed (or brought home, as the literature euphemistically expresses it) nearly 100,000 seals.

The Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum displays mainly 19th-century to present-day sculpture, photography, painting and handicrafts by artists from northern Norway.

Attached to the Galleri Svalbard is the Kunstnersenteret (Artists Centre) which serves as a workshop for local artists with many of the works on sale.

Norwegian Vehicle Museum
Tucked away behind the stream in central Lillehammer, the Norwegian Vehicle Museum is for car buffs, featuring everything from sleighs to vintage cars and motorcycles.

Giske Church
Highlight of Giske island is this ornate 12th-century church. Built largely of marble, its real jewels are the elaborately carved polychrome altarpiece and pulpit.

Malmplassen (Ore Place)
Outside the museum entrance spreads the large open area known as the Malmplassen (Ore Place), where loads of ore were dumped and weighed on the large wooden scale.

1950s whaleboat Southern Actor is moored at the harbour; entry is by your Whaling Museum ticket; while youre there, also look out for the striking monument to whalers.

Constructed in the mid-19th century, and just around the corner from Tuomainengården, is this opulent merchants dwelling, complete with stable and servants quarters.
