Oceanographic Museum & Aquarium
Near the tip of the pier is the Oceanographic Museum & Aquarium , a minimally interesting institution that improves once you encounter its bigger residents such as moray eels and a green turtle.

Piarists Church
Near Łowiczs grand cathedral is this similarly impressive church. Its a Baroque marvel which can be viewed during mass times, generally 7am and 5.30pm on weekdays and several times during the day on Sundays.

Exhibition of Oriental Art
A collection of 17th-century Turkish banners and weaponry, captured after the Battle of Vienna and displayed along with a variety of old Persian carpets, Chinese and Japanese ceramics, and other Asian antiques.

Water Gate
In the 14th century the town was granted municipal status and surrounded by fortified city walls, some of which are still in place. One of the most substantial structures is this gate just south of the Rynek.

Old Town Market Square
The usual starting point on Toruńs Gothic trail is the Old Town Market Square, dominated by its massive redbrick town hall and lined with fine restored houses, many graced by intricate decorative façades.

Museum of Musical Instruments
Institution housing hundreds of instruments, from whistles to concert pianos. It includes intriguing musical devices such as a typewriter for musician notation and a polyphon, the precursor of the record player.

Parish Church of St Michael the Archangel
This Gothic place of worship sits at the highest point of the Old Town, two blocks northwest of the Rynek. It has a nave and just one aisle with a row of six Gothic columns running right across the middle.

Island Amphitheatre
This amphitheatre was built in 1790 and is based on the appearance of the Roman theatre at Herculaneum, Italy. It is set on an islet in the parks lake, allowing part of performances to take place on the water.

Belfry
The high tower at the southwestern corner of the defensive walls is the former cathedral belfry, which can be ascended for cracking views of Cathedral Hill, the town and the Vistula Lagoon and Vistula Spit.

St Hedwigs Bastion
The restored 17th-century St Hedwig’s Bastion, two blocks to the northwest of the Rynek, was once home to a Prussian garrison. It’s now a cultural centre that also houses the tourist office and a restaurant.

St Johns Bridge
Southeast of the Rynek, this Gothic stone bridge (1390) spans the narrow Młynówka River. With half a dozen Baroque statues flanking the sides, it’s Kłodkos scaled-down answer to the Charles Bridge in Prague.

Kalisz Regional Museum
Presenting an in-depth examination of the citys story, this museum features archaeological and historical exhibits from Kalisz and surrounding areas. Its 500m southwest of the Rynek, across the Prosna River.

Church of St Giles
In contrast to the enormous neighbouring cathedral, the Church of St Giles is barely a cupboard. Built between 1218 and 1230, this is the oldest surviving church in Wrocław, and has an original Romanesque portal.

Matejko House
Once home to Jan Matejko, this three-storey town house is now a biographical museum that displays the artwork and interiors the artist commissioned here. The museum has recently reopened after a huge overhaul.

Marie Skłodowska
Marie Curie was born in 1867 along ul Freta, the main street of the New Town. This museum chronicles the life and work of the distinguished scientist, and is situated a test tubes throw from her birthplace.

Museum of Municipal Engineering
Tramcars and trucks fill the courtyard of this former depot while inside theres a small collection of cars and motorbikes. A room of hands-on magnetic and water experiments is sure to keep kids occupied, too.

Church of SS Vincent and James
The Gothic Church of SS Vincent and James was originally a Romanesque basilica founded in the early 13th century. The largest church in the city, its now used by the Uniat (Eastern Rite Catholic) faithful.

Socialist
It has an overwhelming number of portraits and statues of revolutionary communist leaders (mainly from the years 1949–56), and idealised proletarian scenes of farmers, factory workers and so on, striving for socialism.

Spa Park
This large park makes up towns core, and holds an embarrassment of lovely fin-de-siècle pavilions and buildings, including the domed Spa Theatre (Teatr Zdrojowy) and the wooden open-air Concert Shell (Muszla Koncertowa).

Premonstratensian Convent
This imposing, fortified monastery, on the banks of the Wisla, has been home to the Sisters of the Order of St Norbert for more than 800 years. Its also the starting point for the annual springtime Lajkonik pageant.
