This excellent museum delves into the troubled history of the Sami, whose way of life barely survived the threat from Christian missionaries and forced collectivisation. Heroic efforts to keep the culture alive included the putting together of Russia's first Sami dictionary by local legend Aleksandra Antonova and the revival of traditional knife-making, leatherwork, bone carving and other crafts on display. Traditional costume, hunting tools, and photos of ancient stone labyrinths, rock carvings and Sami fighters during WWII also feature prominently.
