This ruined fortress, 3km north of the town centre, is perched high above the Instruch River. In 1812 the castle estate was bought by a Scottish family who established the Georgenburg Stud Farm , which continues to breed Tranken horses today. The farm is also the location of the Georgenburg Cup , an international show-jumping tournament, typically held on the second weekend in September. Vladimir, a potter who is also restoring parts of the castle, provides tours in Russian. Walking here from town through the beautiful countryside is a pleasure; alternatively, take bus 5 (R10) or a taxi (R100).
