Parish Church of St Martin
This church in Martjanci, 4km north of Murska Sobota on the road to Moravske Toplice, contains wonderful 14th-century frescoes painted on the sanctuary’s vaulted ceiling and walls. Look for the centuries-old graffiti on the walls behind the altar.

Vinag
The wine cellars in trg Svobode, dating from the early 19th century, are managed by the wine export company Vinag. The wine shop here has a large selection of local vintages, including Mariborčan, Laški Rizling, Chardonnay, Traminer and Gold Muscatel.

Capuchin Monastery
The 18th-century Capuchin monastery, west of the bus station, has a priceless library of medieval manuscripts, as well as the Škofja Loka Passion , a processional with dramatic elements, from around 1720. Arrange a visit with the TIC or the monastery itself.

Botanical Garden
About 800m southeast of the Old Town along Karlovška cesta and over the Ljubljanica River, this 2.5-hectare botanical garden was founded in 1810 as a sanctuary of native flora. It contains 4500 species of plants and trees, about a third of which are indigenous.

Robba Fountain
The three titans with their gushing urns on this fountain represent the three rivers of Carniola – the Sava, Krka and Ljubljanica – but are modern copies. The original, worn down by time and eaten away by urban pollution, is now housed in the National Gallery.

Franciscan Church of St Leonard
Southeast of Glavni trg is the yellow Franciscan Church of St Leonard, which was originally built by monks fleeing the Turks in Bosnia in 1472, and the attached Franciscan monastery, whose library contains some 12,000 volumes, including 12th-century incunabula.

Tartini House
Tartini House was the birthplace of composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini. Today its the base of Pirans Italian community and is used for cultural events and exhibitions. On the 1st floor is the Tartini Memorial Room , containing his violins and music scores.

Railway Museum
A trainspotters dreamland, theres a boiler room here with 10 locomotives (one going back to 1861 and one you can climb all over) and carriages. In the old ticket office opposite youll find maps, uniforms, lanterns and signalling equipment. Its just north of Center.

Plečnik House
Recently reopened after two years conservation work, this is the little house in Trnovo where Jože Plečnik lived and worked for almost 40 years. Theres an excellent introduction by hourly guided tour to this almost ascetically religious mans life, inspiration and work.

Šutna
A walk along the main street is a trip back in time: pretty, pastel-coloured houses arrayed in a row, many sporting guild and craft signs. In the centre of Šutna stands the Church of the Immaculate Conception (built in the mid-18th century), with a detached Gothic spire.

Opera House
The graceful Opera House, northeast of the National Museum, opened in 1892 as the Provincial Theatre, and plays in German and Slovene were performed here. After WWI it was renamed the Opera House and is now home to the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet companies.

Slovenian Alpine Museum
The town of Mojstrana, the starting point for the northern approaches to Triglav, lies about 15km south of Kranjska Gora. Here youll find this pricey but nicely designed museum, celebrating the history, importance and beloved pastime of mountain exploration in Slovenia.

Statue of Giuseppe Tartini
The much-photographed Tartinijev trg is an oval-shaped, marble-paved square that was the inner harbour until it was filled in 1894. The statue of the nattily dressed gentleman in the centre of it is that of native son, composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770).

Maribor Castle
On Grajski Trg, the centre of Maribors Old Town, is Maribors 15th-century castle. It contains a Knights’ Hall (Viteška Dvorana) with a remarkable painted ceiling, the baroque Loretska Chapel and a magnificent rococo staircase. It also hosts the Maribor Regional Museum.

City Tower
In the middle of Slovenski trg, this tower was erected in the 16th century. Roman tombstones and sacrificial altars from Poetovio were incorporated into the walls in the 1830s – check the reliefs of Medusa’s head, dolphins, a man with grapes, a lion and a man on horseback.

Vogel
The glorious setting and spectacular panoramas make it worth a trip up Vogel – during winter, when its a popular ski resort , but also in its green season, when walks and photo ops abound. The cable car operates from Ukanc – the base station is at 569m, the top station at 1535m.

Orpheus Monument
In front of the City Tower stands the 5m-tall Orpheus Monument, a Roman tombstone from the 2nd century with scenes from the Orpheus myth. It was used as a pillory in the Middle Ages; those found guilty of a crime were shackled to iron rings attached to the holes on the lower half.

Church of Sts Peter and Paul
On the northern side of the Minorite monasterys inner courtyard, the Church of Sts Peter and Paul is one of the most beautiful examples of early Gothic architecture in Slovenia. Reduced to rubble by Allied bombing in January 1945, it was painstakingly rebuilt over the decades.
