Magazin
In Trg Svetega Ahacija - the centre of town in the Middle Ages - the large 18th-century building on the north side is the Magazin, a granary and warehouse where the miners, who were paid in food as well as in cash, kept their stores.

Citizen of Emona
The small gilded statue on top of a column at the western end of Kongresni Trg is a copy (the original is in the National Museum) of the Roman-era Citizen of Emona, dating from the 4th century and unearthed not far from here in 1836.

Column of St Justina
The Column of St Justina commemorates Kopers contribution – a galley – to the Battle of Lepanto in which Turkey was defeated by the European powers in 1571. Nearby is a large Roman covered basin that now serves as a fountain.

Prešeren Monument
Taking pride of place at the centre of Prešernov Trg is the 1905 Prešeren monument designed by Maks Fabiani and Ivan Zajc, and erected in honour of Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren (1800–49). On the plinth are motifs from his poems.

Old Castle
The Old Castle, a 13th-century ruin on Bergantov Hill east of Kamniks centre, can be reached on foot from the end of Maistrova ulica in about 20 minutes; the brochure Tourist Sights in Kamnik and Vicinity includes a map of the walking trail.

Kamšt
One of the most interesting examples of mining technology that still exists is the Kamšt, a 13.6m waterwheel made of wood that was used to pump the water out of flooded mines from 1790 until 1948. It is about 1.5km southeast of Mestni trg.

Murska Sobota Castle
Renaissance-style Murska Sobota Castle, a sprawling manor house from the mid-16th century, houses the award-winning Murska Sobota Regional Museum , which tells the story of life along the Mura River, from prehistoric times to the present.

Fairytale Forest
A series of trails through two hectares of forest next to the Pension Na Razpotju takes children of all ages past three-dozen recreated staged fairy stories – both Slovenian and international. A great way to get kids to do some walking.

Sadnikar Museum
The Sadnikar Museum, the first private museum to open in Slovenia (1893), exhibits Gothic artwork, period furniture and paintings from the 18th century amassed by pack-rat Josip Nikolaj Sadnikar (1863-1952), a local veterinarian and painter.

Koper Regional Museum
The 17th-century Belgramoni-Tacco Palace houses the Koper Regional Museum, whose history collection spans prehistory to more recent times. In beautiful surrounds is art dating from the 15th century, and displays of armoury and musical heritage.

Kostanjevica Cave
This small cave about 1.5km southeast of town, has 40-minute tours in spring, summer and autumn. The guide will lead you 250m in, past a small lake and several galleries full of stalactites and stalagmites. The temperature is a constant 12°C.

Ostan Cheese Dairy
The Bovec Basin abounds in family-run dairies, such as the in-town Ostan Cheese Dairy that produces traditional sheep’s cheese. Ask the TIC for a copy of the pamphlet Along the Bovška Ovca Sheep Trail and track down your own favourite.

Museum of Architecture & Design
This museum, housed in a stunningly preserved 16th-century Fužine castle (worth the visit alone) about 5.5km east of the centre, preserves some 150,000 items from architects, designers and photographers and hosts temporary themed exhibitions.

Serbian Orthodox Church
The interior of the Serbian Orthodox Church, built in 1936 and dedicated to Sts Cyril and Methodius, is covered from floor to ceiling with colourful modern frescoes. There is a richly carved iconostasis separating the nave from the sanctuary.

Commandery
At the southern end of Mestni trg is the so-called Commandery, which once belonged to the Knights of the Teutonic Order (note that it has a 2 above the door, but is number 14 on the square). Note the Maltese Cross above the entrance.

Celje Museum of Recent History
The permanent exhibition, Living in Celje: 1900–2000, records the story of Celje from the late 19th century onwards and includes a re-creation of an early 20th-century street, complete with tailor, hairdresser, clockmaker and goldsmith.

Cerkno Museum
The towns museum is not far southwest of Glavni trg. Its main displays trace the development of the region from earliest times to the modern period, but its biggest draw is the collection of Laufarija masks contained in the exhibit Pust Is to Blame’.

Manzioli House
The Venetian Gothic Manzioli House was built in 1470 and was the residence of an Istrian chronicler in the 16th century. Today it houses the bureau looking after the interests of the communità italiana (Italian community) in Izola – and a wine bar.

Parish Church of St Stephen
Built in 1868 on the site of earlier churches, this parish church would not be of much interest were it not for the two striking towers added by Jože Plečnik in the form of his signature steeples in 1960, to replace the ones toppled during WWII.

Slovenian History Exhibition
Interesting and well-presented interactive exhibition on Slovenian history through the ages, running from the very earliest Roman times, through the Middle Ages, the 19th century, WWI and WWII, and ending with socialist Yugoslavia and independence.
