The sweet Open-Air Museum Pleterje, to the west of the Pleterje Monastery car park, has thatched peasant houses, hayracks, a pigsty and even an outhouse. Farmyard animals roam, making for a lovely pastoral scene.

Drava Tower
About 150m west of the Minorite Monastery is circular Drava Tower, a Renaissance water tower built as a defence against the Turks in 1551. It houses the Mihelič Gallery , which hosts exhibitions of modern art.

Thurn Manor
Radovljicas colourful main square is the town’s leading attraction, lined with houses from the 16th century. Look especially for Thurn Manor, a baroque palace that is home to museums and school of music.

Hercules Fountain
This fountain in the middle of Levstikov trg, the southern extension of Stari trg, is a favourite meeting place in summer. A copy has replaced the original 17th-century statue, which is now in the town hall.

Capuchin Church of St Cecilia
On the south bank of the Savinja River, a covered stairway with 90 steps at Breg 2 leads to the Capuchin Church of St Cecilia. The Germans used the nearby monastery (now apartments) as a prison during WWII.

Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity
This church, which faces Kongresni Trg from across Slovenska cesta and dates from 1726, is the most beautiful baroque building in the city. It contains a multicoloured altar by Robba made of African marble.

Zvezda Park
Leafy Zvezda (Star) Park lies in the centre of Kongresni trg, which was named in honour of the Congress of the Holy Alliance, convened by Austria, Prussia, Russia and Naples in 1821 and hosted by Ljubljana.

Church of St Clement
Just behind Punta lighthouse, the round, serrated tower of the Church of St Clement (originally built in the 13th century but altered 500 years later) evokes the ancient beacon from which Piran got its name.

Alpinum Juliana
About 600 different plant species prosper in this botanical garden, established in 1926. Most of them are Alpine species, but because of the relatively low altitude, quite a few Karst species can also be found.

Parenzana Museum
Izola Museum can now make its superlative claim to fame with the Parenzana, a branch of the Pomorski Museum Sergej Mašera in Piran. It has train models – the largest such collection in the world – and ship models too.

Chapel of St George
This chapel, situated below the watchtower down a small flight of stairs, is one of the oldest surviving remnants of the castle, dating from 1489. It is covered in frescoes and the coats of arms of the Dukes of Carniola.

Homan House
Almost every building on Mestni trg is of historical and architectural importance, but arguably the most impressive is Homan House, dating from 1511 with graffiti and bits of frescoes of St Christopher and of a soldier.

Water Tower
About 300m east of the main bridge is the pentagonal Water Tower, a 16th-century defence tower. Just north of it is a set of steps leading to Židovska ulica (Jewish St), the centre of the Jewish district in the Middle Ages.

Technical Museum of Slovenia
A huge collection of antique motor vehicles and bicycles, water-driven and horse-powered mills, and implements used in agriculture, weaving, forestry, smithing, fishing and hunting. Its 22km southwest of Ljubljana.

Church of St James
Just off Trg Brolo is the disused Church of St James dating to the 14th century.

Old Vine House
Learn about Maribors 400-year-old vine and Slovenian viniculture at Old Vine House, where you can taste local wine from its enormous collection. And dont miss the lovely new floor mosaic tracing Maribors history.

Matkov Kot
Much less explored than neighbouring Logarska Dolina, this magnificent 6km-long valley runs parallel to Logarska Dolina and the border with Austria. Reach here by road by turning west as you leave Logarska Dolina.

Slovenian Firefighters’ Museum
Metlika was the first town in Slovenia to have its own fire brigade (1869), commemorated by the Slovenian Firefighters’ Museum, which is just outside the castle. There are old fire trucks with enormous wheels, ladders and buckets.

Muda Gate
At the southern end of Prešernov trg is the Muda Gate. Erected in 1516, its the last of a dozen such entrances to remain standing. On the south side of the archway youll see the city seal: the face of a youth in a sunburst.

National Liberation Museum
Housed in a stunning 19th-century mansion, the collections here document Slovenia’s struggle for freedom throughout the 20th century, with particular emphasis on the work of the Pohorje Partisans during the Nazi occupation. Riveting.
