Unlike some more famous Basque art galleries, Vitoria’s palace of modern art doesn’t need to dress to impress. It knows that what’s on the inside is all that really counts. It's daring, eccentric and challenging in a way other museums could never get away with.
The large subterranean galleries are filled with engrossing pieces by Basque, Spanish and international artists, displaying some fairly intense modernist work. Over the years we've seen exhibitions featuring 'art' that many would describe as borderline pornography, children's drawings depicting suicide and even a grainy, bloody video of a woman having her hymen sewn back up to make her a virgin again. Yes, this is art designed to shock. Guided tours, in Spanish, run several times a day. After digesting the art, sample some of the cuisine at the much-praised Cube Café inside the museum.
