Museum of Costume

Housed in a stylish modern building, the Museum of Costume (‘traje’ in Spanish) traces the history of fashion over six centuries utilizing more than 150,000 different garments. Displayed in chronological order, the collection contains fabrics and clothes from the Middle Ages to present day Spanish couture. There are also excellent exhibits displaying the clothing of the various regions of Spain, both past and present. Everyday wear is represented as is special occasion, from clothing to jewelry and even furniture. Accessories and shoes are also on display. Those interested in modern fashion will appreciate the collections of Spanish designers such as Balenciaga, Fortuny, and Torretta, as well as Chanel, Dior, and Versace.
Collectively the items show the progression of fashion and costume throughout history, often through audiovisual technology and interactive displays. Activities for children, guided tours, and wonderful temporary exhibitions round out the experience.

Practical Info

It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 7 pm and on Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm. Located at Avenida de Juan de Herrera 2, the closest metro stations are Moncloa and Ciudad Universitaria. Entrance is 3 €.
