Cova de Buda
Just above Atlantis, this place of sanctuary is considered sacred by the spiritually inclined. Its home to a remarkable Buddha image said to have been etched by a Japanese hermit.

Convento de los Carmelitas Descalzos
This is where San Juan de la Cruz is buried. The area immediately south of the convent affords fine views up to the Alcázar, and its worth coming down here just for the views.

Museo de Ceuta
This ageing municipal museum has a small collection showing the peninsula’s pre-Spanish history, with all labels in Spanish. The temporary exhibitions are of more interest.

Mancha Blanca Visitor Centre
There are excellent audiovisual and informative displays about the park here, including a simulation of a volcanic eruption. Its just north of the park boundary on the LZ-67.

Puerto Deportivo de Benalmádena
This port on the coast in Benalmádena is striking for its GaudÍ-cum-Asian-cum-Mr-Whippy–style architecture, and large choice of bars, restaurants and shops overlooking the boats.

Lucentum
The Roman town of Lucentum ,a forerunner of Alicante, is where excavations have revealed a rich wealth of pottery. You can make out its clearly defined streets and town plan.

Musèu dera Val D’Aran
This museum, housed in a turreted and somewhat decaying old mansion, tells the tale of Arans history up to the present. Closed on our visit, it was due to reopen after a revamp.

Museo del Castillo
Vejer castle s small, erratically open museum preserves one of the black cloaks that Vejer women wore until just a couple of decades ago (covering everything but the eyes).

Cova des Mirador
Cova des Mirador is a tiny cavern directly below the main Vedrà viewpoint; many people leave offerings here and there are cushions where you can relax and gaze out over the island.

Centro Temático del Vino Villa Lucia
Just outside Laguardia is this impressive wine museum and shop selling high-quality vino from small local producers. Museum visits are by guided tour only and include a tasting.

Església dels Socors
The baroque 17th-century church Església dels Socors is home to the Museu Diocesà, a fine little museum, secular as much as religious, that complements the Museu Municipal.

Castillo de Tostón
This tubby castillo is not really a castle, more a Martello tower. The art and history displays within are interesting, but the star here is the sweeping view of the surf beach.

Casa de la Historia
Inside the grounds of the Castillo de la Mota, at the summit of Monte Urgull, is this small museum focusing on the city’s history. Theres a particular emphasis on the military.

Casa de la Aduana
Built in 1620, Puerto de la Cruzs old customs house is now home to the tourist office, and has quality arts and crafts for sale, as well as a fine contemporary art museum.

Carmen de los Martires
Romantically dishevelled 19th-century gardens and a restored mansion much in use for posh weddings reside on the site of the splendidly named Convent of the Discalced (barefoot) Carmelites.

Cala de Enmedio
The pretty and secluded little beach of Cala de Enmedio is enclosed between striking eroded rocks. Get here via a waymarked walk of about 1.5km over a small hill southwest from Agua Amarga.

Puente Viejo
Taking the narrow Calle Marqués de Salvatierra will bring you to the small Puente Viejo, with views down onto the river as it rushes into the gorge.

Monasterio de Santa María la Real
The Gothic Monasterio de Santa María la Real, with its fragile-looking, early-16th-century cloisters, is the towns main draw.

Coca Castle
A typically dusty, inward-looking Castilian village, 50km northwest of Segovia, Coca is presided over by a stunning all-brick castle , a virtuoso piece of Gothic-Mudéjar architecture.

Centre Cultural La Misericòrdia
This enormous complex mostly contains offices and a soothing garden facing Passeig de La Rambla. A former chapel, accessed from the other side, is now used as a temporary exhibition space.
