Curiosities near Reinosa include the Yacimiento Arqueológico de Camesa Rebolledo, the excavation site of a Roman villa buried beneath a Visigoth necropolis and a medieval cemetery.

Torre de Mangana
The Torre de Mangana, near Plaza Mangana, is the last remnant of a fortress that was built by Cuencas Muslim rulers. It is all that remains of Cuencas days as a Muslim town.

Poblado de La Atalayita
A pre-Hispanic settlement with a small information centre. The centre was closed when we visited, but its worth the short dirt road detour to have a look if youre hereabouts.

Real Club Náutico de San Sebastián
Up by the harbour at the northeastern end of the beach, the Real Club Náutico de San Sebastián was built in 1928 in a rationalist style. Appropriately enough, it resembles a boat.

Teatro Leal
Both the exterior and interior of the 19th-century Teatro Leal is a pleasingly over-the-top butterfly of a building that is sadly open to the public only during performances.

Museo de Pedra en Sec
Stone for walls, sheep pens, huts and houses are all illustrated in the excellent Museo de Pedra en Sec . Documentation is only in valenciano but it’s a very visual experience.

Miguelete Bell Tower
Left of the main portal of the Cathedral is the entrance to the Miguelete bell tower. Clamber up the 207 steps of its spiral staircase for great 360-degree city-and-skyline views.

Museo Arqueológico Municipal
Built above a late-Roman cemetery with a rich display of Carthaginian, Roman, Visigoth and Islamic artefacts. To get here, head northwest of the city centre, via Calle La Palma.

Playa de los Genoveses
The first beach you reach southwest from San José is Playa de los Genoveses, a 1km-long stretch where the Genoese navy landed in 1147 to aid in the Christian attack on Almería.

Jardín Botánico Atlántico
Across the road from the Laboral, this verdant garden provides an excellent introduction to the flora of Spains north coast and other territories fringing the Atlantic Ocean.

Illot dels Porros
Just north of the Necròpolis de Son Real, the island called Illot dels Porros also contains remains of an ancient necropolis. Its a fairly easy swim for the moderately fit.

Casa Cilla Museo del Grano
Located about 250m north of the church, on the road to El Cotillo, this small museum is devoted to grain – both its production and the harsh life of the farming cycle in general.

Antigua Carnicería
The eastern side of Plaza del Pópulo is occupied by the Antigua Carnicería, from 1547, which must rank as one of the worlds most elegant butcheries. Its now used as a courthouse.

Plaza del Paraguas
Plaza del Paraguas got its name from its inverted-umbrella design, which once accommodated an open-air market. Today it sports a big umbrella to protect visitors from the elements.

Playa de la Malagueta
Playa de la Malagueta is a sandy city beach that is handy to the city centre, has some excellent bars and restaurants close by, and stretches several kilometres from the port.

Iglesia Arciprestal
The Gothic village church can be admired through a glass screen at any time. The visit – free or guided in summer, guided only in winter – includes a museum of religious art.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Antigua
One of the island’s oldest churches, built on the site of a 16th-century chapel. Set in a pleasant square, the most interesting feature is the pretty pink-and-green painted altar.

Bodegas Vega de Yuco
South of Masdache, heading towards Tías, the terrace here is a lovely spot to sip and admire the landscape. Theres a botanical garden to explore once youve sampled the wines.

Església de Santa Maria de Déu de Roser
This convent church, adjacent to the Museu de Pollença, is a baroque job with barrel vault, gaudy retable and medallions in the ceiling. Its used for the Festival de Pollença.

Domus do Mitreo
Just outside the cathedrals west doors are the subterranean remains of a Roman temple dedicated to mysterious god Mithras and of a Roman house with parts of mosaics and murals.
