Halmstads Sculptures
In Stora Torg, the main square, stands Carl Milles’ sculptural fountain Europa and the Bull , with the characteristically buff mermen with somewhat scary faces. Picasso’s Woman’s Head is down by the river, in Picassoparken off Strandgatan.

Gruvmuseum
If you like Kåkstan, you will simply love the Gruvmuseum, covering 250 years of mining. Bus 1 to Malmberget departs from directly opposite the Gällivare church; outside of summer hours, contact the Gällivare tourist office to arrange a visit.

Utvandrar
This poignant monument commemorates all America-bound emigrants. Its figures are characters from Vilhelm Moberg’s classic The Emigrants: Karl Oscar, looking forward to the new country, and Kristina, looking back towards her beloved Duvemåla.

Guards’ Tent
On the slope below Kina Slott, the carnivalesque Guards’ Tent was erected in 1781 as quarters for the dragoons of Gustav III, but it’s not really a tent at all. The building now has displays about the gardens and Drottningholm’s Royal Guard.

Baldersnäs Herrgård
Baldersnäs Herrgård , past the village of Dals Långed, is a beautiful manor house and grounds, complete with English garden, swimming spots, restaurant and cafe, handicraft stalls and a small Naturum. Quality accommodation is offered here too.

Källa kyrka
This atmospheric church, at a little harbour about 36km northeast of Borgholm, off Road 136, is a fine example of Öland’s medieval fortified churches. The broken rune stone inside shows the Christian cross growing from the pagan tree of life.

Hans Hedberg Museum
Sculptor Hans Hedberg (1917–2007) was born just south of Örnsköldsvik, and you can see some of his work – including his signature huge sculptures of fruit and eggs – at the Hans Hedberg Museum, in the shiny modern building by the harbour.

Furuvik
Families mob Furuvik amusement park in summer, thanks to its roller coasters, Aqua Jungle pool area with water slides and ape enclosure at the zoo. Furuvik is 12km southeast of Gävle; take a local train to Furuvik stop (seven minutes, every two hours).

Gettlinge
The ancient grave field of Gettlinge, together with similar site Mysinge, stretches for kilometres on the ridge alongside the main Mörbylånga–Degerhamn road. The fields include burial sites and standing stones from the Stone Age to the late Iron Age.

Brändström & Stene
Tucked away in an anonymous industrial block, this is one of Stockholm’s best private art galleries. It’s famed for its intuitive sense for the next big thing, and past exhibitors have included Olafur Eliasson, Clay Ketter, Jan Håfström and Jeppe Hein.

Boat Tours
From mid-June to mid-August daily boat tours run from Södra Skeppsbron to the island of Limön , part of the surrounding archipelago. The island has a nature trail , mass grave and memorial to the sailors of a ship that was lost here in the early 1800s.

Inlandsbanemuseet
The Inlandsbanemuseet, inside the Sorsele train-station building, covers the history of the railway. Though supposedly neutral, Sweden allowed Nazi troops to transfer supplies to different parts of occupied Norway using the railway during WWII.

Galleri Nohab Smedja
Galleri Nohab Smedja, an old smithy’s workshop now used for temporary art exhibitions, such as metal art by local and international smiths, is managed by Innovatum Science Center. The gallery is opposite the museum, just behind the tourist office.

Orrefors
Established in 1898, this huge site is home to a factory and a large shop with a shipping service. The ubersleek museum-gallery showcases a range of stunning glassware spanning 1910 to the present day, and houses stylish bar-cafe Kristallbaren .

Gräsgårds Fiskehamn
On the east coast, about 5km north of Eketorp, Gräsgårds Fiskehamn is a delightful little fishing harbour. A little further north, there’s an 11th-century rune stone at Seby , and in Segerstad there are standing stones, stone circles and over 200 graves.

Fiske och Sjöfartsmuseum
Nautically themed displays at this small maritime museum – part of the Gammlia museum complex – focus on the history of seal hunting in the Arctic. There are several fishing craft on display, as well as a tug boat that formerly plied the Ume River.

Regionmuseet & Konsthall
Originally intended as a palace, the building ended up being used as an arsenal. It now houses local-history exhibits and art, handicrafts and silverware displays. Café Miro serves great organic lunches, with herbs and flowers picked from the owner’s garden.

Church
Karesuando boasts the northernmost church in Sweden, built in 1816; the wooden altar was made by Swedish artist Bror Hjorth.

Humanitetens Hus
Run by the Red Cross, Humanitetens Hus has poignant exhibitions on the theme of courage and responsibility. Among the permanent fixtures is one of 36 famous ‘white buses’ used by the Swedish Red Cross in WWII to save 20,000 people from concentration camps.

Hembygdsgården Kollsberg
Hembygdsgården Kollsberg, down beside Fryken lake, is a dinky homestead museum with several old houses, including a Finnish cabin. A cafe serves coffee and waffles (Skr40) and the traditional Finnish settlers dish motti och fläsk (oat porridge with pork, Skr80).
