The bruksmuseum, full of old carriages, rusty tools, sleeping quarters and a factory office, is definitely worth a look, although its opening times are erratic.

Opposite the library, Växjö Konsthall showcases contemporary work by local and national artists; expect anything from minimalist ceramics to mixed-media installations.

Söderhamns F15 Flygmuseum
Söderhamns F15 Flygmuseum, by the airfield, 5km southeast of town, has a collection of old military aircraft, model planes and a reconstructed command centre. Take bus 59.

Nyakyrkan
The attractive, white ‘new’ Sami church, from 1882. Its shape, reminiscent of a traditional Sami dwelling, is particularly picturesque in winter when surrounded by snow.

Pukeberg
Of the two glassworks in Nybro, the unfortunately named Pukeberg, just southeast of the centre, is perhaps more interesting for its historic setting (dating from 1871).

Sjöhistoriska Museet
A must for fans of model ships (there are over 1500 mini vessels in the collection). The museum’s exhibits also explore Swedish shipbuilding, sailors and life on deck.

Galleri Ferm
Constant surprises, mainly from Scandinavian artists such as Per Cederbank, Emil Olsson and Yrjö Edelmann, plus works by internationally renowned contemporary artists.

Mats Jonasson Factory
The large and popular Mats Jonasson factory sells somewhat kitsch engraved glass-animal designs from around Skr159. There’s also a restaurant for a post-shopping refuel.

Jönköpings Läns Museum
Exhibits cover local history and contemporary culture, but the real reason for coming here is to see the haunting fantasy works of artist John Bauer (1882–1918).

Kiruna Kyrka
Kiruna kyrka, built to look like a huge Sami kåta (hut), is particularly pretty against a snowy backdrop (it was voted Sweden’s most beautiful building in 2001).

Piteå Church
Piteå church, built in 1686, is among the oldest wooden churches in Norrland. It escaped being burned by the Russians in 1721 because they were using it as their headquarters.

Östergötlands Länsmuseum
Has a decent European art collection (Cranach’s painting of Eden, Original Sin, is wonderful, with a smiling Eve twiddling her toes), and Swedish art dating from the Middle Ages.

Örbyhus Slott
The impressive 15th-century castle Örbyhus Slott is where mad King Erik XIV was imprisoned by his brother Johann. Erik was then murdered with a bowl of pea soup laced with arsenic.

Sigtuna Museum
This museum looks after several attractions in the town and has a small exhibition area; its currently closed for renovations, but you can see some of the exhibits at the Rådhus.

Gustav III’s Paviljong
Gustav III’s Paviljong is a superb example of late neoclassical style; the furnishings and decor reflect Gustav III’s interest in all things Roman after his Italian tour in 1782.

Kanalmuséet
The Tardis-like Kanalmuséet initiates you into the history of the Dalsland Canal, designed by engineer Nils Ericsson and completed in 1868, through use of imaginative displays.

Vänersborgs Museum is the country’s oldest provincial museum and has a remarkable southwest African bird collection along with local exhibits and the odd ancient Egyptian artefact.

Bror Hjorth’s House
Bror Hjorth’s House, the studio of beloved local artist Bror Hjorth (1894–1968), is jam-packed with Hjorth’s charming paintings and sculptures, and hosts temporary exhibitions.
