Two of Fribourg’s more interesting industries include beer and chocolate. Sadly, the Cardinal beer factory closed down in 2010, but its Musée de la Bière Cardinal is still open for visits.
The burnt-red-and-caramel-brick Villars chocolate factory , in business since 1901, is the sweetest. Its known for its slabs of Swiss chocolate made from Alpine-rich Gruyère milk. The factory can’t be visited but its hybrid cafe-shop can, to the joy of locals who flock to buy chocolate at factory prices and drink hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
