Housed in an eye-catching stone building topped by a cupola, this museum shows the paintings of Giovanni Segantini (1858–99). The Italian artist beautifully captured the dramatic light and ambience of the Alps on canvas.

Museo delle Culture Extraeuropee
About 1.7km from central Lugano, in Villa Heleneum, is the Museo delle Culture Extraeuropee . The brew of tribal relics from far-off countries includes a collection of masks and statues soaked in sexuality. Take bus 1.

Johann Jacobs Museum
Coffee is the name of the game and the permanent collection includes everything from coffee pots to paintings of coffee houses. It’s about 500m south of Bellevueplatz along the east side of the lake, but is closed until mid-2012.

Ital Reding
Set in baroque gardens, this turreted mansion was once the home of mercenary soldiers. Roam the 17th-century manor’s wood-panelled rooms and vaulted cellar and the adjacent 13th-century Haus Bethlehem for a taste of the past.

Valle di Campo
A winding forest road brings you to this broad, sunny, upland valley. The prettiest of its towns is Campo , with scattered houses and Romanesque belltower. The valley is closed off by Cimalmotto , which offers rugged mountain views.

Musée de la Bière Cardinal
Two-hour brewery tours demonstrate how water, malt and hops are turned into nine different types of Cardinal beer and include a guided tour of the Musée de la Bière Cardinal ; visits are strictly by advance reservation only.

Show Cheese Dairy
Located on the grounds of Engelberg Monastery is a state-of-the-art cheesemaking operation, where you can watch the cheesemakers, savour dairy goodies in the bistro and buy creamy silo-free cheeses and other Swiss-themed souvenirs.

Herrenacker
Framed by pastel-coloured houses with steep tiled roofs, this is one of Schaffhausen’s prettiest squares. In August it’s an atmospheric backdrop for music fest Stars in Town (Amy Macdonald and Status Quo were headliners in 2014).

Kindermuseum Creaviva
The fun-packed Kindermuseum Creaviva lets kids experiment with hands-on art exhibits or create original artwork with the atelier’s materials during the weekend Five Franc Studio . Bus 12 runs from Bubenbergplatz direct to the museum.

James Joyce Foundation
James Joyce spent much of WWI in Zürich and wrote Ulysses here. This foundation, which boasts Europes largest Joyce collection, hosts regular English-language readings of his work on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Geneva’s bohemian streak strikes in Carouge, where the lack of any real sights – bar fashionable 18th-century houses overlooking courtyard gardens and this local history museum, packed with 19th-century ceramics – is part of the charm.

Klostermuseum St Georgen
This monastery museum sits between the Rathaus and the Rhine. A Benedictine monastery was built here in 1007, but what you see today, including the cloister and magnificent Festsaal (grand dining room), is largely a late-Gothic creation.

Richard Wagner Museum
Housed in the composer’s former residence in Tribschen, on the lake’s southern shore, this museum harbours historic musical instruments including rarities such as a regal (portable organ). Take bus 6, 7 or 8 from the train station to Wartegg.

Schloss Waldegg
The grand Schloss Waldegg , a few kilometres north of town, was built in the 17th century and displays period furniture and paintings. Take bus 4 from the station to the St Niklaus stop, then walk north past the church for a further 10 minutes.

Museum Burg Zug
Zugs town museum, housed in an 11th-century castle, displays paintings, costumes and a 3D model of the town, plus special themed exhibitions. It’s an excellent introduction to Zug – and its past tendency to partially sink into the lake.

Museum zu Allerheiligen
Entered via the cathedral cloister, the Museum zu Allerheiligen showcases treasures from Schaffhausen fossils to Etruscan gold jewellery. The art collection contains works by Otto Dix, Lucas Cranach the Elder and contemporary Swiss artists.

Musée du Fer et du Chemin de Fer
At Musée du Fer et du Chemin de Fer you can see a blacksmith working at a traditional forge. Power for the furnace is derived from four large paddlewheels turning outside in the river. The railway section includes models and memorabilia.

Zeitglockenturm
A knight, a king and a grim reaper jig on the hour atop this 12th-century astronomical clock, whose hands are reversed so the smaller one shows the minutes. Its on Marktplatz, which springs to life during the Wednesday morning market.

Monte Brè
A funicular from Cassarate (walk or take bus 2 from central Lugano) hauls you up to the summit of Monte Brè (925m), the trailhead for hiking and mountain biking trails that grant expansive views of the lake and reach deep into the Alps.
