For sublime lake views , follow the road past the rock-hewn Temple of Endymion , and past the ruined Byzantine castle , which overlooks its necropolis' rock tombs.
From the beach and a ruined Byzantine church , note the island just opposite – its base conceals ancient building foundations. It's sometimes possible to walk there, when waters recede.
The large Temple of Athena , accessed on a westward path behind the agora car park, occupies a promontory overlooking the lake. Only three walls remain, but the perfectly cut blocks (no mortar) are impressive. Other signposted paths lead eastwards to the agora , the bouleuterion and (several hundred metres across the pastures) the unrestored theatre , with barely a few seating rows remaining. Also nearby are stretches of city walls (circa 300 BC).
