Harran is famous for its beehive houses, a design dating back to the 3rd century BC, although the present examples were mostly constructed within the last 200 years. The design evolved partly in response to a lack of wood for roofing and partly because the ruins provided a source of reusable bricks. The Harran houses are unique in Turkey, but similar buildings are in northern Syria.
The Harran Kültür Evi , within walking distance of the castle, allows visitors to see inside one of the houses, and then sip cold drinks in the walled courtyard afterwards.
