Reached through three massive gateways from Küçük Liman or via steps from Büyük Liman, Amasra's citadel occupies the promontory fortified by the Byzantines. The Dereağzı Tunnel under the castle leads to a fresh-water pool.
The citadel precincts are now mostly residential, but the impressive original walls and some relics survive, including the restored 9th-century Byzantine Church Mosque (Kilese Camii), which functioned as the former and then the latter until 1930.
