In the 4th century, Alexander the Great chose a secure site for Smyrna’s acropolis on Mt Pagos, southeast of the modern city centre, erecting the fortifications that still crown the hill. The view from ‘Velvet Fortress’ is magnificent, especially just before sunset. Bus 33 from Konak will carry you up the hill.
