Eminonu Square

Located in the heart of the old city, Eminonu has long been a popular neighborhood in Istanbul. Shortly after Turkey won its independence, the area underwent extensive renovations and a large square opened up at the southern end of the Galata Bridge, in front of the New Mosque – now known as Eminonu Square.  Today, the square buzzes with activity, welcoming locals and tourists alike and it is unlikely any visitor leaves Istanbul without spending time there.

You can plan to spend most of a day or two around Eminonu Square, visiting the New Mosque, the Spice Bazaar, the Grand Bazaar and the Galata Bridge. Grab lunch at one of the many fish restaurants nearby and get lost in the side streets that lead out from the square. Then take a break for some people watching while you feed the pigeons before hopping on a ferry down the Bosphorus.

Practical Information

Eminonu Square is easily accessible from almost anywhere in Istanbul. It is an easy walk from Sultanahmet or across the Galata Bridge from Beyoglu. You can also take the tram to the Eminonu stop or jump on a ferry from elsewhere in the city.
