Ayastafanos Church
Eğirdirs last remaining Orthodox church; 13 others were torn down after the Greek community departed in the population exchange. The 12th-century Byzantine stone building originally had a roof made of a ships hull.

Gevaş Cemetery
Like Ahlat on the north shore, Gevaş has a cemetery full of tombstones dating from the 14th to 17th centuries. Notable is the polygonal Halime Hatun Türbesi , built in 1358 for a female member of the Karakoyunlu dynasty.

Kalburlu Kilisesi
Some 2km after the Monastery Valley ticket office, you enter a gorge, hemmed by high cliffs. The Kalburlu Kilisesi (Church with a Screen) with its superb chiselled entrance is the first rock-outcrop building in the group.

Güzel Sanatlar Galerisi
Urfas back streets have many distinctive limestone houses with protruding bays supported on stone corbels. A few have been restored, most notably the house of Hacı Hafızlar. Its near the PTT, and is now an art gallery.

Dripstone Cave
Close to Cleopatras Beach, this stalactite-studded cave has humidity levels of 95% and is said to produce a certain kind of air that, if inhaled and exhaled long enough, has the ability to relieve asthma sufferers.

Cleopatras Beach
Sandy and quite secluded in low season, and with fine views of the fortress, Cleopatras Beach is the citys best. Alanyas main beaches are also decent, although east of the centre theyre fronted by a busy main road.

Atatürk Cultural Centre
The Atatürk Cultural Centre was designed by Hayati Tabanlioğlu in 1956–57 and appears to best advantage at night, when its elegant steel mesh is illuminated. It is currently undergoing long-overdue restoration works.

Atatürk House
Across the road from Kültür Parkı, Atatürk House (1895) commemorates the great leader in a pine-scented garden setting. The restored structure contains mostly original furnishings from when Atatürk stayed here in the 1920s and 1930s.

El Nazar Kilise
Carved from a ubiquitous cone-like rock formation, the 10th-century El Nazar Kilise has been well restored with its snug interior a riot of colourful frescoes. To find it, take the signposted Zemi Valley trailhead off Müze Caddesi.

Rahibeler Manastırı
Downhill from the Çarıklı Kilise, the cordoned-off Rahibeler Manastırı (Nunnery) was originally several storeys high; all that remain are a large plain dining hall and, up some steps, a small chapel with unremarkable frescoes.

Yeşil Cami
Built between 1378 and 1387 under Sultan Murat I, Yeşil Cami (Green Mosque) has Seljuk Turkish proportions, influenced by Seljuk homeland Iran. The minarets green-and-blue-glazed zigzag tiles foreshadowed the famous local industry.

Amasra Museum
This excellent museum occupies a 19th-century naval school at the southern end of Küçük Liman. Exhibits, from coins to carpets and including Roman, Byzantine, Hellenistic and Ottoman finds, showcase Amasras multi-layered history.

Derinkuyu Underground City
Derinkuyu underground city, 10km south of Kaymaklı, has large, cavernous rooms arrayed on seven levels. When you get all the way to the bottom, look up the ventilation shaft to see just how far down you are – claustrophobics, beware!

Şehitler Çeşmesi
Secreted away near the harbour, next to the Hacı Ömer Camii (1903), the poignant Martyrs Fountain commemorates the Turkish soldiers who died in the surprise Russian attack of 1853. It was built using money recovered from the soldiers pockets.

Housed in the Yakutiye Medrese, this museums striking central dome is lined with faceted stalactite work that catches light from the central opening to make a delightful pattern. Surrounded by leafy gardens, its perfect for a tea break.

Stone Bridge
The stone bridge over the Göksu dates back to AD 78 and has been restored many times, including twice in the last century (1922 and 1972).

Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Camii
The Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Camii was built by the Beylerbey (Governor of Governors) Tekeli Mehmet Paşa. The building was repaired extensively in 1886 and 1926. Note the beautiful Arabic inscriptions in the coloured tiles above the windows.

Yılanlı Kilise
The Yılanlı Kilise sits in the furthest corner of the Yukarı Valley, its frescoes deliberately painted over with black paint, probably to protect them. The hole in the roof of one chamber, surrounded by blackened rock, shows that fires were lit there.

Dündar Bey Medresesi
In 1281, Hamidoğulları emir Felekeddin Dündar Bey turned this grand stone structure – then a 67-year-old Seljuk caravanserai – into a medrese . The small on-site bazaar sells Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe strips, floppy hats and holiday gear.

Schneidertempel Art Center
Housed in a synagogue dating from 1894, the Schneidertempel (Tailors temple) exhibits work by local Jewish artists, as well as frequent exhibitions from abroad. Quality varies, but weve seen some excellent photographic exhibitions here.
