Saklı Kilise
A yellow sign points the way off Müze Caddesi to the Saklı Kilise, only rediscovered in 1956. When you reach the top of the hill, follow the track to the left and look out for steps leading downhill to the right.

Greek Orthodox Church
Next to Mersin Museum, this walled 1852 church is still in use and has a lovely iconostasis. To gain entry, go to the left side of the church facing 4302 Sokak and ring the bell.

Galerı Apel
This long-established commercial gallery behind the Galatasaray Lycée has a large stable of Turkish artists working in a number of media. Its shows are always worth a visit.

Sahabiye Medresesi
This Seljuk theological school dates from 1268 and its interior now functions as a book bazaar. Its richly decorated doorway with stalactite detailing is particularly notable.

Atatürk Statue
Central Cumhuriyet Alanı (Republic Sq) is also called Heykel (statue), after this large Atatürk monument.

Post Office
Turkeys most impressive former post office is housed in a 17th-century caravanserai covered with carvings, including teardrops in stone dripping down the walls. Restoration is ongoing.

Köprülü Mehmet Paşa Camii
This beefy, helmet-roofed building beside the Yemeniciler Arastası (a row of shops beside a mosque) dates to 1661. The metal sundial in the courtyard was added in the mid-19th century.

Kuleli Military School
Past the small village of Çengelköy on the Asian side is the imposing Kuleli Military School, built in 1860 and immortalised in Irfan Orgas wonderful memoir, Portrait of a Turkish Family.

Eski Aynalı Çarşı
Originally built in 1335 as the Orhangazi Hamam (the bathhouse of the Orhan Camii Külliyesi), Eski Aynalı Çarşı is a good place to shop for Karagöz shadow puppets and other traditional items.

Column of Julian
Erected in honour of Roman Emperor Julian the Apostates visit to Ankara, the Column of Julian sits proudly in a square ringed by government buildings, it is usually topped by a storks nest.

St Pauls Well
Just on the edge of the Old City (signs point the way from Atatürk Bulvarı) are the ruins of St Pauls house, his supposed birthplace, which can be viewed underneath sheets of plexiglass.

İzzet Paşa Camii
This is one of the largest mosques constructed during the Ottoman Empire. It was built by the grand vizier in 1796 and restored in 1903. Its design was influenced by European architecture.

Turkish & Islamic Arts Museum
Housed in Yeşil Camiis former medrese , this museum contains 14th- to 16th-century İznik ceramics, mihrab curtains, jewellery, embroidery, calligraphy, dervish artefacts and Karagöz puppets.

Culture Park
The Culture Park lies north of the Muradiye complex but some way down the hill and boasts tea gardens and playgrounds. On the Cultural Park grounds you will also find the Archaelogical Museum.

Kendirli KiIisesi
Wedged between modern buildings, this church was constructed by French priests with the help of Napoleon III in 1860. A closer inspection of the building reveals eye-catching black-and-white medallions.

Byzantine Aqueduct
Running intermittently east from Ayasuluk Hill, the long and tall Roman/Byzantine aqueducts are festively adorned with the huge nests of migrating storks, who stand guard from March through September.

Malatya Ethnographic Museum
English-language information brings alive this showcase of jewellery, weaving and a fearsome collection of old weapons. Its all housed near five restored old Malatyan houses along Sinema Caddesi.

Hıdırlık Kalesi
This 14m-high tower was built in the 1st or 2nd century AD as a mausoleum and later, due to its excellent position looking over the bay, played an important role in the citys defences as a watchtower.

Üç Haçlı Kilise
Head north from the Haçlı Kilise and when the trail branches, take the right-hand path to reach the Üç Haçlı Kilise, with its stunning ceiling relief and damaged frescoes featuring an enthroned Jesus.

Kral Kapı
Kral Kapı is named after the regal-looking figure in the relief carving. The kingly character, a Hittite warrior god protecting the city, is a copy; the original was removed to Ankara for safekeeping.
