This church has some fabulous frescoes – the Nativity and the Crucifixion for starters – dating from the 9th and 11th centuries.

The Tahtalı Kilise sits at the further end of the Aşağı Valley. It has well-preserved Byzantine and Seljuk decorative patterns.

Side Museum
Contained within a 5th-century bathhouse, Sides museum has an impressive (if small) collection of statues and sarcophagi.

Reşadiye Camii
Built by the Ottomans, the Roman columns supporting the back and front porticoes were originally from the Temple of Jupiter.

Jinan Garden
This Zen-style garden, complete with a pagoda and soothing water, also has a teahouse for some suitably pensive refreshment.

Karaalioğlu Parkı
This large, attractive and flower-filled park has great panoramic views over the sea and is prime sunset promenading territory.

Kale Kapısı
This gate into the old town is marked by an old stone clock tower (saat kalesi) and a statue of Attalus II, the citys founder.

Self-caterers (and sightseers) will enjoy this market. Like the Wednesday market , it offer fruits, veg and cheeses from village farms.

St John’s Cathedral
Consecrated in 1874, St Johns Cathedral was partly financed by Sulktan Abdülaziz and the main altar was a gift from Pope Pius IX.

The curvaceous 18th-century Camondo Stairs, one of Beyoğlus most distinctive pieces of urban design, run south from Kart Çınar Sokak.

Bazda Caves
About 20km east of town, the impressive Bazda Caves (signed Bazda Mağaları) are supposed to have been used to build the walls of Harran.

Temple of Augustus and Rome
Except for a couple of imposing, inscribed walls, not much remains of this temple (AD 25) built to honour the Roman Emperor Augustus.

Irgandı Köprüsü
Spanning the gorge, north of the Setbaşı road bridge, this restored Ottoman structure houses shops, cafes and touristy artisans workshops.

Yeni Fırfırlı Camii
North of Selahattin Eyubi Camii is Yeni Fırfırlı Camii, a finely restored building, once the Armenian Church of the Twelve Apostles.

Mevlevihane Vakıf Müzesi
Focusing on the Mevlevi Sufis (a dervish order), and featuring artworks, kilims (woven rugs), manuscripts, and clothing worn by the Mevlevi.

Han el Barur
About 6km east from the caves are the remains of the Seljuk Han el Barur, a caravanserai built in 1128 to service the local trade caravans.

Saray Gate
To the southwest of Göl (Lake) Gate are the remains of the more minor Saray Gate - Sultan Orhan (1326-61) had a palace near here in the 14th century.

Hüseyin Paşa Camii
At Kara Meydanı, the square midway between the belediye (town hall) and Dergah is the Hüseyin Paşa Camii, a late-Ottoman construction built in 1849.

Mevlevi Tekke
Within the Yivli Minare complex is the heavily restored Mevlevi Tekke, a whirling dervish monastery, which probably dates from the 13th century.
