Azmar Mountain
Further afield, about 6km northeast and above the city, is a stunning picnic spot with million-dinar views.
Erbil Civilization Museum
This small museum inside the Ministry of Antiques houses a collection of Iraqi archaeological finds, some dating back to 6000 BC.
Municipal Park
Visitors are likely to pass by this sweet little park en route to the bazaar. Pop in for a stroll among green gardens and fountains.
Dohuk Dam
Grab a taxi to the dam, cool off by the water and enjoy the views. Make your way down the winding road by foot to Komelgeha Paradise.
Old Monastery
Perched atop the citys main hill, this building is so small it could be confused with a church, but residents are adamant that it was once an active monastery.
Eastern Gate
The Eastern Gate and its carvings are all that is left of what used to be a high-walled town. A cemetery near the main entrance contains the remains of prominent family members.
Abbasid Palace
Perched imposingly on the banks of the Tigris River, in the Old City (Sheikh Omar), the 13th-century palace is one of Baghdad’s architectural wonders, with detailed brickwork and arches.
Bazaar
Akres bazaar might not be as grand as those found in the bigger cities, but its the life and soul of this small community. Mingle with the locals as they go about their daily shopping.
Grand Mosque
Built in 1784 and renovated in 2012 the Grand Mosque lost many of its original features during the renovations. A colourful sight nonetheless, packed with street vendors just outside the gate.
Corniche Promenade
Take a stroll down the Corniche Promenade during the weekend or sit at one of the cafes and watch families as they enjoy their evening walks. You can reach the city dam by following the walkway uphill.
Ottoman Government Building
Take a look inside what used to be the headquarters of the central administration during the Ottoman Empire. Unfortunately the derelict building is slowly falling to pieces, as little maintenance seems to have occurred.
Delal Bridge
Take a stroll over this historical bridge, also known as Pirdi Delal in Kurdish. The stone arch is thought to have been built by the Romans and crosses the Little Khabur River, a branch of the Tigris. There is a small amusement park nearby.
National Museum of Iraq
Founded in 1923, this museum once housed a world-class collection dating from the dawn of man. In the chaotic days after Baghdad fell to US forces, looters robbed the museum of 15,000 priceless artefacts; most were recovered or returned, but about 5000 items remain missing.
