15km north of Erbil, perched on a tiny mound on the side of the road, is a very modern-looking Khanzad Castle. The two-floor military fort is made of stones and plaster and dates back to Sulaiman Beck, Prince of Soran, a former Kurdish emirate. The steps to the castle are steep and full of pebbles; comfortable shoes are recommended. The castle is on the right hand side when driving towards Shaqlawa from Erbil.
