Modelled after Istanbul's Blue Mosque, Erbil's largest mosque was comissioned by wealthy businessman Jalil Khayat and opened in 2007. The colourful building sits on 15,000 square metres of land in Erbil's affluent Shoresh neighbourhood and is flanked by two 65m-tall minarets, easily seen from the citadel. The mosque can accomodate up to 2000 people; non-Muslims are welcomed outside prayer time.
