Near Abu Dhabi airport, Masdar City is the world's first carbon-neutral, zero-waste city powered entirely by renewable energy. However, this is not your regular residential neighbourhood but rather a science community with a graduate-research university and companies focused on sustainability, clean tech and renewable energy. It's a great place to visit for the architecture and the sci-fi vibe.
Part of the fun is hopping on a podlike driverless Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) vehicle at the car park for the short ride to the main campus. Pick up a map at the information desk upstairs from the PRT terminal (or download it from the website) for a self-guided tour. Several cafes and restaurants provide sustenance.
